Principal Investigator
Dr. El-Shahawy is board certified in Nephrology, and Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He specializes in the treatment of kidney diseases of all causes including Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD), Hypertension, glomerulonephritis, Heart Failure, and genetic diseases such as polycystic kidney disease, and Alport’s syndrome.
Dr. El-Shahawy is keen on providing state-of-the art treatment in order to halt, and/or delay the progression of the kidney disease with the goal of avoiding, and/or delaying the need for dialysis.
After earning his medical degree from Cairo University School of Medicine, Dr. El-Shahawy completed his internal medicine residency at St. Mary's Hospital/Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. El-Shahawy went on to complete a fellowship in nephrology and transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, as well as a subsequent fellowship in nephrology at USC School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. El-Shahawy received a master degrees in public health (MPH), as well as a Master in Health Administration (MHA) from the University of Southern California.
In September 1989, Dr. El-Shahawy joined the Nephrology faculty at LAC-USC Medical Center. In 1991, he became the Medical Director of the Kidney, and Pancreas Transplantation program until March 2007.
Dr. El-Shahawy established his Nephrology practice in March 2007 and is currently seeing patients at his office at 5830 Whittier Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90022.
Dr. El-Shahawy is Adjunct Clinical Professor of Medicine, KECK-USC Scholl of Medicine.-, and Clinical Professor of Medicine at City of Hope National Medical Center.
His current Hospital affiliations include Monterey Park Hospital (where he is a member of the Medical Executive Committee), and St. Francis Medical Center.
